The University of Nigeria has officially announced the schedule for its 55th Convocation Ceremony, with Vice Chancellor Professor Simon Uchenna Ortuanya extending an invitation to the general public, graduates, and stakeholders to join the multi day celebration on behalf of the institution's Governing Council, Management, and Senate.
The event is scheduled to run from Wednesday, July 22, to Saturday, July 25, 2026, and will feature a series of academic and celebratory activities across the university's Nsukka campus.
According to the official schedule, the 55th Convocation Lecture will take place on Thursday, July 23, at the Princess Alexandra Unity Hall and Theatre by 11 am prompt, while the Award of First Degrees, Diplomas, and Certificates will follow on Friday, July 24, at the Ekpo Convocation Hall by 10 am prompt.
The ceremony will close on Saturday, July 25, with the Award of Higher Degrees and Honorary Doctorate Degrees, also held at the Ekpo Convocation Hall by 10 am prompt.
This year's convocation marks the first to be presided over by Professor Ortuanya since his appointment in August 2025 as the 16th Vice Chancellor of the University, a position that made him the first indigene of the Nsukka cultural zone to hold the office since the Institution's establishment in 1960. A Professor of Law and former Associate Dean of the Faculty of Law at UNN's Enugu Campus, Ortuanya previously served as Secretary to the Enugu State Government and Commissioner for Education in the state before his appointment to the university's top office.
UNN's convocation ceremonies have in recent years featured the graduation of well over ten thousand students across undergraduate and postgraduate categories, alongside the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on distinguished Nigerians and the elevation of retired professors to the status of Emeritus Professor, a tradition the University has consistently maintained at previous editions of the event.
