Rivers State University has launched a N110 billion strategic plan spanning 2026 to 2030, setting its sights on becoming one of Nigeria's foremost universities within the next five years.
The 2026 to 2030 Strategic Development Plan was unveiled on Wednesday at the university's Convocation Arena in Nkpolu Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, during a meeting attended by members of the governing council, principal officers, and the university congregation.
Vice Chancellor Professor Isaac Zeb Obipi described the document as a comprehensive framework for institutional growth. "This Five Year Strategic Plan sets out RSU's goals, strategic objectives, expected outcomes, and intervention strategies," he stated.
Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Okey Wali (SAN), called on external stakeholders to back the plan financially. "I hereby invite the Visitor to the University, donor agencies, friends and well wishers, and all stakeholders to support and fund the implementation of this strategic plan. We are confident that this plan will take RSU to greater heights in the community of higher institutions," he was quoted as saying.
The plan identifies six major challenges confronting the institution, including funding constraints, infrastructure deficits, limited research collaboration, and service delivery inefficiencies. To address these, the university outlined strategies covering alumni engagement, strategic partnerships, and innovative fundraising to ensure long term financial sustainability.
On infrastructure, the plan sets out intentions to upgrade lecture halls and laboratories, expand student accommodation, improve campus security, and deploy advanced ICT systems. The plan also prioritises staff development through mentorship initiatives and performance management systems designed to build a skilled workforce.
Research, innovation, and entrepreneurship feature prominently, with curriculum reviews, industry partnerships, and the establishment of innovation incubation centres among the key initiatives. While the university will fund a significant portion of the plan internally, additional resources are expected from government support, donor agencies, alumni contributions, and public private partnerships.
Professor Emeritus Joseph Ajienka, Chairman of the Strategic Development Planning Committee, noted that the plan was developed through extensive consultations with faculties, departments, satellite campuses, and administrative units, and reaffirms the university's founding ideals of excellence, creativity, innovation, and inclusivity.
A dedicated Strategic Planning Office will be established to oversee execution, with a mid term review scheduled within the first two years.
