Federal University Lokoja is set to establish a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Cyber Sciences following the approval of a ₦3 billion special intervention grant by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

The approval, conveyed in an official letter, signed by the TETFund Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny S. T. Echono was announced by the university's Director of Strategic Communication and Corporate Documentation, Dr Tosin Olagunju, in a statement on Wednesday.

Dr Olagunju disclosed that the intervention, valued at ₦3 billion, is intended to support cutting edge research and innovation in the rapidly evolving fields of Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Cyber Sciences, describing the development as a landmark achievement for the institution.

"The establishment of the Centre represents a major milestone in the University's quest to position itself as a leading institution for technological innovation, digital transformation, advanced research, and solution driven scholarship in Nigeria and beyond," he stated.

He added that "the Centre is expected to provide a robust platform for interdisciplinary research, technological development, capacity building and strategic collaborations that will address contemporary national and global challenges."

Dr Olagunju further noted that the centre would strengthen the university's contributions to manpower development in emerging technologies and support the Federal Government's drive toward a knowledge based economy.

Responding to the announcement, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Gbenga Ibileye, expressed appreciation to TETFund for the confidence reposed in the institution and reaffirmed the university's commitment to prudent management, transparency, accountability, and strict adherence to all guidelines governing the implementation of the intervention.

Professor Ibileye maintained that the centre would expand the frontiers of research and innovation within the university and create opportunities for scholars, researchers, students, and industry stakeholders to engage in transformative technological solutions that can positively impact society.
