Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has approved two Coaster buses and the fencing of Bayelsa State Polytechnic, Aleibiri, Ekeremor Local Government Area, during the institution's maiden combined convocation ceremony, while commending the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for its role in advancing tertiary education across the state.
Diri, who spoke as Visitor to the Institution, described TETFund as an indispensable partner in Bayelsa's educational development. "TETFund as an organ of the Federal Government has been part and parcel of the history of educational development in Bayelsa and indeed across Nigeria," he stated, adding that the agency had proven to be worthy partners not only in the polytechnic but across other state owned higher institutions.
The governor directed the Commissioner for Transport to ensure immediate procurement of the buses and instructed the Commissioner for Works to assess and report on the construction of internal roads and other infrastructure needs within the campus. He also announced plans to extend power supply from newly installed gas turbines through Sagbama and Aleibiri to Ekeremor, eliminating the need for a diesel powered generator at the institution.
Diri reaffirmed that education remains the central focus of his administration, disclosing a deliberate shift from white collar education towards technical and vocational training. "When we assumed office, the first thing on our minds was education, the second was education, and the third was education," he stated, adding that the Government had established science and technical colleges across all eight local government areas to supply technically skilled students to institutions such as the polytechnic.
"That is why this Government has prioritised technical and science education that equips our youths with practical skills to become employers of labour rather than job seekers," he added.
The governor highlighted achievements recorded since the Institution's relocation to its permanent site, including programme accreditation, infrastructural expansion, and improved academic standards. He praised management, lecturers, and the host community for their resilience and commitment to the institution's growth.
Diri urged Bayelsa youths to embrace technical education rather than depending on political patronage or white collar jobs, and charged graduating students to be worthy ambassadors of both the institution and the state.
