Professor Remi Aiyede of the University of Ibadan's Department of Political Science has been elected the 21st President of the Nigerian Political Science Association through a consensus arrangement at the body's annual conference and business meeting.

The electoral process, which brought together political scientists from universities and research institutions across Nigeria, was conducted by a committee chaired by Professor Alade Fawole, formerly of Obafemi Awolowo University's Department of International Relations and currently with the Department of Political Science at the University of Ilesa, Osun State.

Following the association's tradition of allocating three principal offices to the host institution, Professor Olubukola Stella Adesina and Dr Stephen Lafenwa also emerged by consensus as Treasurer and General Secretary respectively.

The newly constituted executive council includes Professor Murtala Mohammed as Vice President, Professor Robert Dode as Assistant Secretary, Professor Yusuf Musa as Financial Secretary, and Professor Rahanat Lawal as Auditor. Professor Ike Alumona was elected Public Relations Officer, Professor Jaja Nwanegbo as Director of Research, and Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Nasiru as Legal Adviser. Immediate past president Professor Hassan Saliu takes up the role of Ex Officio I, with Dr Ejura Egwumi serving as Ex Officio II.

The conference also settled the question of hosting rights for 2027, with Prince Abubakar Audu University, Ayingba, Kogi State, securing the next annual gathering. The institution, which attended with a delegation of 25 members, also pledged to sponsor the event, a commitment welcomed by association members.

Distinguished figures attended the business meeting, including Emeritus Professor Bayo Adekanye, Emeritus Professor John Ayoade, and Professor Tunji Olaopa, Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission.

Aiyede, a former Head of the Department of Political Science at the University of Ibadan, is expected to lead the association in deepening research, scholarship, and policy engagement in political science across Nigeria.
