Peter A. Fagbola, a student in the Department of Systems Engineering at the University of Lagos, has emerged as a winner at the Huawei Global ICT Competition held in Shenzhen, China, as part of Team Nigeria Cloud, which claimed first prize and a cash award of N3.5 million.

Fagbola, a member of the ABS CITS Huawei Academy within UNILAG's Faculty of Engineering, competed against thousands of university students from across the globe at what organisers describe as one of the world's most prestigious technology contests.

According to a statement released by the University on Friday, Fagbola's route to the global finals began at the national level, where he emerged as the overall winner in the Cloud and AI Track while representing UNILAG.

He subsequently advanced to the Southern Africa Regional Competition, where his team secured first prize and earned Nigeria's place in the global finals. At the Shenzhen event, Team Nigeria Cloud outperformed competing teams from multiple countries to take the top prize.

UNILAG credited the achievement to Fagbola's ability alongside the training available at the Institution, stating, "Mr. Fagbola's success reflects not only his exceptional talent and dedication but also the quality of mentorship and training provided by UNILAG. His achievement is a testament to the University's commitment to nurturing innovators who can compete and win at the highest levels."

Following the win, Fagbola was invited to the Huawei Education Summit in Abuja, where he and other award recipients were formally honoured.

The University noted that the achievement should encourage other students to pursue excellence in national and international competitions, describing his story as one that "embodies the values of self discovery, perseverance, and global competitiveness that UNILAG champions."

Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, congratulated Fagbola on behalf of the University community and wished him continued success in future endeavours.

The Huawei Global ICT Competition forms part of a broader push by technology firms to identify and reward student talent in cloud computing and artificial intelligence across universities worldwide, with national qualifying rounds feeding into regional and global stages.

Fagbola's win adds to a growing list of international recognitions earned by Nigerian students in technology and academic competitions in 2026.
