Management of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has dissolved all Students' Union activities across the Institution with immediate effect, according to an internal memorandum issued by the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs dated 19th July, 2026. The directive was issued on the authority of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chike Princewill R. Chike, and affects the Three Arms of the Students' Union, Hall Representatives, and all other related union bodies until further notice.

The memorandum, signed by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. G. N. Woke, directed all Executive members of the dissolved union to immediately hand over institutional assets in their possession to the Dean's office. Mandated handover items include Union properties, official documents, financial records, keys, identification materials, and any other items belonging to the Students' Union.

Affected student leaders have also been instructed to make themselves available to appear before an investigative panel, where executives will be required to give an account of their stewardship when invited. The memorandum stressed that officers are expected to comply promptly, warning that failure to adhere to the directive will attract appropriate disciplinary action. The University did not disclose the specific reasons behind the dissolution or the issues the panel has been mandated to examine.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has since condemned the development, describing it as a violation of students' democratic rights and calling for its immediate reversal. In a statement signed by its National President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, the association argued that a democratically elected union should not be dissolved through an administrative directive without clearly stated allegations, a proper investigation, and an opportunity for affected officials to defend themselves. NANS urged the university to suspend implementation of the order, respect the mandate of the elected officials, and publicly disclose its reasons for the decision.

Prof. Chike assumed office as the 10th Vice Chancellor of UNIPORT on 13th July 2026, succeeding Prof. Owunari Georgewill.
