Professor Christopher Nyong Ekong has been appointed the 9th substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo, ending months of administrative uncertainty that had left the institution operating under an acting chief executive.

The appointment, which takes effect from 16th June, 2026, was announced in a statement signed by the institution's Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Mrs. Blossom E. Okorie, dated 30th April, 2026.

Ekong, a distinguished scholar in the field of Economics with a proven track record in teaching, research, and administration, emerged from what the Council described as a rigorous and transparent selection process that involved the review of applications, assessment of credentials, and interactions with shortlisted candidates.

"The Council approved the appointment of Prof. Ekong as the 9th substantive Vice Chancellor of the University, effective 16th June, 2026," Mrs. Okorie stated.

On the integrity of the process, the Registrar noted that "the selection process was conducted in line with established legal framework and guidelines, adopting best practices, ensuring fairness, merit, and integrity throughout," adding that Ekong "emerged as the most suitable candidate, having demonstrated outstanding academic excellence, administrative competence, visionary leadership, and a strong commitment to the advancement of the university."

Before his elevation, Ekong served as Chairman of the Committee of Deans, a role in which he made significant contributions to institutional growth and development.

His appointment brings to a close a protracted selection process that had stalled at the end of the tenure of his predecessor, Professor Nyaudoh Ndaeyo, and necessitated the interim appointment of Professor Samuel Adewumi of Lagos State University as Acting Vice Chancellor.

"The Governing Council expresses confidence that under Professor Christopher Ekong's leadership, the university will continue to advance its mandate of excellence in teaching, research, and community service," Mrs. Okorie disclosed.

The new Vice Chancellor has pledged to reposition the institution in line with its core values as a centre for teaching, learning, and manpower development.
