The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, now designated Yakubu Gowon University, has approved the promotion of 34 academic staff to professorial ranks, with 17 elevated to the rank of Professor and 17 others appointed as Associate Professors across a wide range of disciplines.

The promotions were ratified at the institution's 101st Regular Meeting of the Governing Council, held on 10 and 11 July under the chairmanship of Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso, following the consideration of favourable external assessment reports on the candidates' scholarly publications. The promotions took effect from October 2025.

Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr Habib Yakoob, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, noting that the promoted academics cut across fields including Community Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Engineering, Religious Studies, Guidance and Counselling, Accounting, Library and Information Science, Business Administration, Physics, Parasitology and Entomology, Physiology, Crop Science, Educational Foundations, and Banking and Finance.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, congratulated the beneficiaries, describing the elevations as recognition of sustained dedication to scholarship and academic excellence. He added that the university would continue to strengthen its internal processes to ensure the timely consideration of external assessment reports and the promotion of deserving academics in line with established guidelines.

"These promotions are not just about attaining a higher rank. They reflect our belief that hard work and dedication should be recognised and rewarded. I congratulate all those promoted and encourage them to see this as a call to even greater service to the university, their profession, and society," Fawehinmi said.
