The United States Mission in Nigeria has launched applications for the 2026 cohort of the EducationUSA Nigeria Opportunity Fund Programme, targeting academically outstanding Nigerian students with leadership potential who wish to study in the United States.

The application window opened on 15 June and closes on 30 June 2026, according to a notice published by the US Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria. The programme is coordinated by the Public Diplomacy Section of the US Mission through EducationUSA Nigeria.

According to the mission, the initiative is designed to support access to US higher education while advancing American commercial diplomacy and the shared economic interests of both countries. The 2026 cohort has also been framed around the Freedom 250 celebration, marking 250 years of American leadership, innovation, and democratic values.

"Freedom250 marks 250 years of American leadership, innovation, and democratic values, and the OFP 2026 cohort will advance these priorities by preparing globally competitive talents aligned with US economic and strategic interests," the mission stated.

Priority consideration will go to students whose academic profiles and career paths align with US strategic interests in STEM, artificial intelligence, and critical emerging technologies. The programme also reinforces US priorities around lawful and well managed student participation in American higher education Institutions, with participants expected to fully comply with US immigration regulations and visa conditions.

The Opportunity Fund Programme covers essential upfront application costs, including standardised testing fees, application fees, and related expenses.

To qualify, applicants must demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, research capability, notable achievements, and a clear intention to pursue post secondary education in the United States. The mission stressed that participants would be held to the highest standards of integrity and accountability throughout the programme.

Required documents include a completed application form, academic records, a personal statement, evidence of achievements, and proof of leadership and research capability. All materials must be submitted before the 30 June deadline.
