The National Youth Service Corps has declared support for a new federal initiative aimed at expanding youth participation in agriculture, with a focus on skills, funding access, and long term sector growth.
The Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, made this known on Tuesday in Abuja during the launch of the Youth in Agribusiness Land Trust Fund, an initiative introduced by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development. He described the programme as a clear step towards strengthening youth involvement in agriculture and addressing food security challenges.
Nafiu noted that the scheme continues to prioritise agriculture through its Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme, which equips corps members with practical knowledge in agro allied ventures. He explained that the new fund would deepen this effort by creating structured opportunities within the agricultural value chain.
"This initiative will provide our Corps Members with practical experience, mentorship, and access to opportunities within the agricultural value chain. It will also help nurture a new generation of agripreneurs who are ready to transform Nigeria's agricultural landscape," Nafiu stated.
He further acknowledged the contributions of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, and other development partners, noting their role in promoting youth driven agricultural transformation. The NYSC leadership also pledged full support towards ensuring effective implementation of the initiative.
In his remarks, the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, outlined the broader objectives of the programme, stressing its capacity to create employment across multiple segments of the agricultural sector. He disclosed that the ministry, in partnership with relevant stakeholders, is working to expand economic opportunities for young Nigerians nationwide.
According to him, the initiative is structured to bring youths into active participation in agricultural production and agribusiness development, with collaboration expected from state governments, financial institutions, and private sector players.
"This is a call to action, a call to partnership, and a call to invest in Nigerian youths. I invite all stakeholders to support this vision," Olawande stated.
The event also featured recognition of young agripreneurs whose contributions to agricultural innovation and development were highlighted.
