Five hundred and seven students admitted into the Osun State College of Health Technology, Ikirun, have been told at their matriculation ceremony that they have not simply chosen a career but accepted a responsibility for human lives, and that the standards expected of them begin now rather than at graduation.
The warning came from the Institution's Rector, Salaudeen Oyewale, who used the second matriculation ceremony on Thursday to deliver a direct message to the incoming class about what the healthcare profession demands. "The profession you are entering deals directly with human lives. Therefore, it is not just a career but a calling. You must be disciplined, focused, and committed to excellence," he said.
Oyewale urged the students to stay clear of distractions and to approach their training with purpose, noting that any lapse in discipline or ethical standards could have consequences that extend far beyond their own academic records. "Avoid distractions that may derail your academic journey. Embrace integrity, diligence, and respect for constituted authority. Let your conduct reflect the values and standards of this institution. Remember, success here is not accidental; it is earned through hard work, consistency, and determination," he said.
The Rector also reaffirmed the College's commitment to practical training and academic support, describing the Institution as a growing centre of excellence in health technology education through its focus on quality assurance and curriculum standardisation.
Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr Mustapha Olawuyi, congratulated the new students but was equally direct in his expectations. "The Governing Council remains committed to ensuring that this Institution maintains high academic and moral standards. We will continue to provide the necessary support, policies, and oversight to promote quality education and a conducive learning environment. At the same time, we expect full cooperation from students, staff, and all stakeholders," he said, warning that indiscipline and misconduct would not be tolerated.
