The Abia State Government has introduced new digital platforms to improve data management and monitor students’ learning progress across the state.

The initiatives, known as the Education Management and Information System and the Abia State Learning Identity Number, are designed to support effective planning and track learners from entry to the end of basic education.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Goodluck Ubochi, disclosed this on Monday, February 16, 2026, while briefing journalists after the State Executive Council meeting in Umuahia.

He said the platforms will enable the government to monitor each pupil’s academic journey and identify areas that require improvement.

The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, explained that the system brings together education records from public and private institutions into a central digital database.

According to him, the platform stores information on basic and secondary education to support policy formulation, performance measurement, and long-term planning.

He added that schools across the 17 local government areas have received secure access details to use the system.

Kanu also stated that the platform supports the issuance of the Abia State Learning Identity Number, which serves as a unique identification code for every pupil in the state.

On teacher recruitment, he revealed that 36,415 applications were submitted during the second phase of the exercise, while 24,023 applicants were shortlisted for the computer based test.

He said the examination date would be announced later, adding that 5,394 teachers had already been employed and that 4,000 additional candidates would be recruited in the next batch.

The commissioner further announced the resumption of the Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education Programme for the 2025/2026 academic session in all local government areas.

He noted that public awareness activities are ongoing to encourage participation, especially among school dropouts, traders, and artisans.

On sports development, Kanu said Abia State emerged overall winner at the recent National Basic Education School Sports Games, securing eight gold medals in athletics.

He explained that the trophies were presented to Governor Alex Otti during the council meeting and that the governor promised to host the winning team.

Kanu also stated that Abia State has ranked first in the National Examinations Council examinations for three consecutive years.

He described the performance as evidence that the administration’s education reforms are producing positive and measurable outcomes.
