ABSU Admission Eligibility Criteria

To gain admission into Abia State University, candidates must meet the admission eligibility criteria set by the institution for the academic session.

These requirements apply to candidates seeking admission through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry.

General Eligibility Requirements for ABSU Admission

  1. Candidates seeking admission into Abia State University must first choose the university as their first choice institution during Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board registration.

  2. Candidates who did not initially choose ABSU may still apply after completing a change of institution through JAMB.

  3. Applicants must also meet the minimum UTME cut off mark approved by the university for the admission year. Candidates who score below the required cut off mark will not be eligible to participate in the admission process.

  4. In addition, candidates must register for and participate in the university’s Post UTME screening exercise, as this is an essential requirement for admission consideration.

O-Level Eligibility Criteria

  1. To be eligible for admission into Abia State University, candidates must possess at least five credit passes in relevant subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, in not more than two sittings.

  2. The accepted O-Level examination bodies include:

    • West African Examinations Council (WAEC)

    • National Examinations Council (NECO)

    • National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB)

  3. Candidates must ensure that the required subjects correspond with the course they intend to study.

UTME Eligibility Criteria

For UTME applicants, eligibility for admission into Abia State University depends on the following:

  1. Meeting the UTME Cut Off Mark

  2. Candidates must score at least the minimum cut-off mark approved by the university.

  3. Correct Subject Combination

  4. Candidates must choose the correct UTME subject combination for their intended course.

  5. Participation in Post UTME Screening

  6. Candidates must register for and complete the Post UTME screening exercise.

Failure to meet any of these conditions may affect admission eligibility.

Direct Entry Eligibility Criteria

  1. Candidates applying through Direct Entry into Abia State University must possess one of the following qualifications:

    • OND

    • NCE

    • HND

    • IJMB

    • JUPEB

    • A-Level certificates

  2. Applicants must also satisfy the required O-Level credits and obtain the Direct Entry form through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.

Each department may have additional requirements depending on the course of study.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does ABSU accept a combination of WAEC and NECO?
A: Yes, for most courses, you can combine two sittings. However, Medicine and Law typically prefer a single sitting.

Q: Is English compulsory for all courses?
A: Yes, whatever field of study you are applying for, it is compulsory to pass the English language in your O-level.

Q: What is the "Pre degree" program?
A: It is a one year intensive program that prepares you for 100 level admission if you didn't meet the JAMB requirements initially.

Q: Can I change my course after the 100 level?
A: Yes, but only if you meet the CGPA requirements of the new department and if there is space available.

Q: Can a direct entry student apply for medicine?
A: ABSU is very restrictive with DE for Medicine. Most medical students must enter through the 100 level UTME route.

Q: How long does a standard degree take?
A: Most Arts and Science courses take 4 years, Engineering and Agriculture take 5 years, and Medicine/Optometry take 6 years.
