The National Open University of Nigeria has taken a decisive step to reposition its public image by appointing Mr. Ambrose B. Gowong as the Head of its newly established New Media Unit. The appointment, approved by the Vice Chancellor, is a strategic move aimed at strengthening the institution’s digital communication and visibility in a competitive academic landscape.

Placed within the Office of the Vice Chancellor, the New Media Unit is designed to centralise and professionalise communication processes. In his new capacity, Gowong will oversee a broad spectrum of responsibilities, including content development, brand positioning, media monitoring and intelligence, as well as digital archiving and documentation. These duties are structured to ensure the coherent, timely, and effective dissemination of information across digital platforms.

Gowong brings a rich blend of professional experience and academic qualifications to the table. He holds a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication from Kaduna Polytechnic. His academic pursuit continued at NOUN, where he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma and a Master’s degree in Mass Communication. Additionally, he earned a Master’s degree in Development Communication from Kaduna State University and is currently pursuing a PhD in Mass Communication.

Beyond his administrative oversight, the seasoned media professional has been designated as the official compere for the university’s social functions. This appointment is expected to leverage his vast experience in public engagement and stage presentation to enhance the quality of university events. However, it was clarified that academic ceremonies will remain under the moderation of the Registrar to uphold established institutional tradition.

Observers view this appointment as a strategic blend of professional expertise and academic depth. It positions NOUN to adapt more effectively to the evolving digital media landscape while strengthening its institutional voice. Stakeholders across the university’s faculties, directorates, units, and study centres have been encouraged to collaborate with the new unit to ensure the effective delivery of its mandate.
