American Open University Nigeria, also known as A'Global, has unveiled a merit based financial aid programme targeting students unable to afford technology focused higher education.
The SKILL Scholarship, standing for Scholarships for Knowledge, Innovation, Leadership and Learning, represents the university's effort to remove economic barriers blocking capable students from accessing education that could transform their career prospects and enable them to contribute to Nigeria's growing technology sector.
Dr David Seyi Akanbi, Acting Vice Chancellor, explained that the scheme aims to ensure financial difficulties do not stop talented young people from becoming technology professionals in fields where Nigeria urgently needs skilled workers.
He highlighted growing demand for expertise in software engineering, data science, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and technology entrepreneurship, stressing that access to quality training has become more important than ever.
"We are witnessing a crisis of opportunity. Too many brilliant minds are locked out of this future simply because they cannot afford the tuition. We don't want a lack of funds to be the reason why people won't realise their potential and contribute to the economy," Akanbi stated.
The university revealed that the scholarship breaks away from traditional selection methods that rely heavily on examination scores and grade point averages.
Instead, applicants will be evaluated using a 100 point SKILL Scorecard measuring five key areas, including financial need, technical knowledge, innovation demonstrated through project portfolios, leadership potential, and evidence of self directed learning.
The programme will cover tuition costs for degree courses aligned with the digital economy, specifically Software Engineering, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Business Administration, and Entrepreneurship.
According to the institution, applications have opened for the upcoming academic session, with candidates required to complete a technical assessment, submit a portfolio showcasing their work, and present a video pitch explaining why they deserve the scholarship.
The initiative addresses a critical challenge facing Nigerian students who possess talent and ambition but lack financial resources to pursue technology education at a time when these skills drive economic growth globally.
American Open University Nigeria positions itself as a technology driven institution offering online and flexible learning options for students seeking careers in digital fields.
