Corps members serving in Osun State have received a direct set of instructions from the State's NYSC coordinator, covering everything from personal safety to their responsibilities during Nigeria's electoral process.
Kubiangha delivered the message during a courtesy visit to the palace of the Ogunsua of Modakeke, Oba Joseph Olubiyi Toriola, as part of a familiarisation tour across local government areas in the state that began in the Ife Zone. The visit brought together Corps members and community leaders and was intended to assess how well Corps members were integrating into their host communities and fulfilling their primary assignment duties.
On security, the Coordinator left little room for ambiguity. Night travel was strongly discouraged, and Corps members were reminded that any movement outside their duty areas required official NYSC permission. He stressed that unsanctioned journeys, particularly after dark, exposed young graduates to risks that were entirely avoidable with proper planning and discipline.
Kubiangha also used the occasion to prepare corps members for their role in Nigeria's electoral system. Under a longstanding Memorandum of Understanding between the NYSC and the Independent National Electoral Commission, Corps members regularly serve as ad hoc staff during elections. He urged them to approach their electoral training with seriousness, describing the responsibility as a meaningful contribution to democratic governance.
Beyond security and elections, the Coordinator addressed longer term concerns. He encouraged Corps members to engage actively in Community Development Service, which he described as central to the scheme's purpose, and to make deliberate use of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Programme to build practical skills and financial habits that would serve them after the service year.
Oba Toriola, responding on behalf of the host community, said his experience with Corps members in Modakeke had been positive. He noted that he had received no negative reports about their conduct and appealed to NYSC authorities to sustain the practice of posting Corps members to the palace, describing the arrangement as valuable for both the graduates and the Community.
For corps members in Osun State, the Coordinator's message was a reminder that national service carries obligations that extend well beyond showing up at a place of primary assignment.
