Female inmates at the Lagos State Children Correctional Centre for Girls, Ìdí Árábà, Mushin, have received a significant boost to their welfare following a visit by undergraduates from Covenant University. The Heart in Action Initiative, a group from the Faculty of Economics, orchestrated the donation drive to support the rehabilitation of the girls.
The programme featured a menstrual hygiene awareness session where the inmates were educated on proper health practices. The team focused on emotional well being during menstrual cycles and addressed the myths and stigma often associated with menstruation.
Items donated included foodstuffs, toiletries, and fairly used clothes. The students mobilised these resources by encouraging classmates to contribute and raising funds through crowdfunding. Chidera, a member of the team, reflected on the visit, describing the experience as emotional. She noted that listening to the stories of the girls, which included accounts of abandonment and abuse, was moving.
Despite the difficult backgrounds of the inmates, Chidera expressed hope, observing that many of the children appeared bright and determined. She urged non governmental organisations and the public to provide better facilities and opportunities for girls in correctional facilities. She stressed that one does not need to be wealthy to impact lives positively.
“Small contributions gathered from many people can go a long way in supporting those in need,” Chidera stated.
She further encouraged young people to contribute to charitable causes, adding that the dreams expressed by the girls, such as becoming pilots, could be realised if society collectively supported them. One of the beneficiaries, Seun, offered prayers for the team in appreciation of their kindness. Chidera assured that this outreach was the first of many initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable girls in correctional centres.
