As part of efforts to bridge the technology skills gap and strengthen research and innovation in the country, Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, has entered into a strategic partnership with a private technology firm, MiGO Mobile Nigeria.

The collaboration culminated in the inauguration of a technology hub on the university campus, known as the Care and Research Development Centre.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of Covenant University, Professor Timothy Anake, expressed optimism about the initiative, noting that the centre would deliver significant benefits to students, staff, and the larger community.

According to him, the hub will provide students with hands on technology transfer opportunities, enable participation in the research and development of MiGO devices, and open pathways for internships and employment.

He further highlighted the scholarship component of the partnership, revealing that two students had already emerged as the first beneficiaries.

“That we also have four of our students recognised as the company’s ambassadors is another plus to us as an institution,” the vice chancellor said, adding, “Before long, many more students will enjoy the scholarship.”

Reflecting on the process that led to the establishment of the centre, Professor Anake commended the dedication and perseverance of those who drove the project to fruition.

He stated that “what we are witnessing today speaks volumes to vision and alignment in action in Covenant University to develop highly skilled manpower across various fields for the global economy and we are deeply committed to this cause.”

In his remarks, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of MiGO Mobile, Mr George Evans, described the partnership as a deliberate step toward equipping students with advanced technological competencies while nurturing a strong research and development culture that links academia with industry.

He explained that the initiative was guided by the goal of closing the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

“So, for us in MiGO Mobile, it’s not really about our products, but about helping the next generation to acquire the requisite technology knowledge and skills to make a difference in the world of technology, even now as students.”

Evans stressed that education remains the most valuable investment, noting that the quality of a nation’s workforce largely determines its economic growth and global competitiveness.

He also disclosed that MiGO Mobile’s product portfolio includes laptops, smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, power banks, and other wearable devices. He added that the company plans to partner with MTN to make its smartphones available at selected outlets nationwide, with implementation expected to commence soon.

The event also featured the presentation of scholarships to two students, Ayomide Ogunmola and David Ibiyemi.

While Ogunmola, a 100 level student, received a ₦10 million scholarship covering full tuition from 100 to 500 level, Ibiyemi, a 500 level student, was awarded ₦2.2 million.

Additionally, four students were formally recognised as MiGO Mobile ambassadors during the event.
