Covenant University has taken a decisive step in expanding Nigeria's legal education landscape, with Chancellor Dr. David Oyedepo presiding over the groundbreaking ceremony for a new College of Law on 12 February 2026.

The date carried special significance for the institution, coinciding with the anniversary of Covenant University's licensing approval on 12 February 2002. Dr Oyedepo confirmed that construction of the College would begin immediately following the ceremony and announced that a groundbreaking for a College of Medicine would follow later in the month.

Addressing attendees, Dr Oyedepo described the College of Law as a strategic intervention designed to fill pressing voids in Nigeria's legal and jurisprudential training system while restoring dignity to the legal profession. He reflected on the university's remarkable trajectory since its founding, recalling that critics once dismissed the institution as a "glorified secondary school," contrasting that perception with its current standing as Nigeria's top institution in the QS Sustainability Rankings and its record of producing highly employable graduates. He remarked that "As we open this new chapter, we do so with confidence, because God has always gone ahead of us."

Pro Chancellor Pastor Faith Oyedepo framed the occasion as a realisation of the university's declared year of "Open Doors," noting the symbolic weight of the founding anniversary date. Board of Regents Secretary Barrister Banji Baruwa described the development as divinely appointed and expressed conviction that the College would emerge as one of the finest in Nigeria and beyond.

Vice Chancellor Professor Timothy Anake welcomed the College as the dawn of a transformative era in legal education, voicing confidence that it would cultivate outstanding legal practitioners whilst crediting the Chancellor and Board of Regents for their forward looking leadership.
