The Federal College of Fisheries and Maritime Technology, Victoria Island, Lagos, has matriculated 1,200 students for the 2025/2026 academic session. This record intake follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive to align the institution with the newly created Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.
Provost Dr. Onuoha Paul Chuks described the figure as a milestone, noting it is a marked departure from the 298 students admitted in the 2019/2020 session. He explained that the presidential directive has brought necessary visibility to the college within the global maritime community. Consequently, the institution has expanded its academic programmes from seven to 15, while establishing two additional departments and upgrading infrastructure.
Dr. Chuks disclosed that the college is awaiting final certification from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and the International Maritime Organization for its professional certificate programmes. The institution recently acquired a Full Mission Bridge Simulator Class A. Once approved, graduates will be able to obtain their Certificate of Competency locally. This development will eliminate the need for students to travel abroad for certification at exorbitant costs.
Furthermore, the Provost highlighted ongoing collaborations with institutions such as the University of Lagos and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology. He noted that 14 students received scholarships for the current session, an increase from the previous five. He commended the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Isiaka Oyetola, for his support.
Chairman of the Governing Council, MacDonald Ebere, stated that the institution remains pivotal to developing a skilled workforce. He emphasized that Nigeria’s marine resources hold potential for food security and employment, which the college is positioned to unlock through knowledge and innovation.
