The Federal Government has inaugurated the Implementation Monitoring Committee for the 2025 FGN ASUU Agreement to ensure full, timely, and transparent implementation of the provisions and strengthen industrial harmony in the university system.

At the inauguration in Abuja, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, described the move as a major step towards consolidating stability in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector. She stated that the committee was set up to ensure compliance with agreed timelines and deliverables, while also monitoring progress and supporting engagement with stakeholders.

The Minister noted that the successful conclusion of negotiations reflected the commitment of both the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities to dialogue, mutual respect, and sustainable reform of the university system.

Permanent Secretary, Mr. Abel O. Enitan, described the inauguration as an important development in strengthening governance and accountability mechanisms within the sector. He urged members of the committee to carry out their responsibilities with professionalism and objectivity.

Chairman of the committee, Olarewaju Tejuoso, pledged diligence and transparency in the execution of the assignment. He was joined in that stance by the President of ASUU, Prof. Chris Piwuna, who called for sustained engagement and regular meetings to support the process.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to the full implementation of the agreement and to sustained industrial harmony across Nigerian universities. It said the monitoring structure would help ensure that commitments made during the negotiation process are properly followed through.

The committee is expected to serve as a central mechanism for tracking implementation, resolving issues that may arise, and keeping communication open between the government and university stakeholders. Officials said this approach is intended to reinforce trust and reduce tensions in the education sector.
