The Federal Government is repositioning the Nigeria Police Force through education, with a southern campus of the Police Academy set to open in Erije, Abeokuta, Ogun State, and 42 police colleges earmarked for conversion into monotechnics.
Minister of Education Dr Tunji Alausa confirmed this on Monday in Abuja when Inspector General of Police Mr Tunji Disu led senior police officers on a courtesy visit to the ministry.
Alausa noted that the initiatives formed part of President Bola Tinubu's broader agenda to reform the Force through structured education and training.
"This meeting is in continuation of President Bola Tinubu's agenda to reposition the police to deliver on its core mandate and improve security across the country," Alausa stated.
The proposed southern campus is expected to admit its first set of students between September and November 2026, following resource verification by the National Universities Commission. Alausa directed the NUC to fast track the process to ensure academic activities commenced as scheduled.
On the college conversions, Alausa disclosed that a presidential waiver had been secured to ease the transition of 42 police colleges into monotechnics. Deliberations also covered accrediting five to six of the proposed monotechnics to offer industry relevant courses aimed at strengthening police operational capacity.
Three committees have been constituted to drive implementation. A Resource Verification Committee will be chaired by the NUC Executive Secretary, while a second committee on capacity improvement in police colleges will be chaired by a Deputy Inspector General of Police alongside the National Board for Technical Education. A third committee on infrastructure and physical development for the southern campus will be chaired by the Executive Secretary of TETFund in collaboration with senior police officers.
Minister of State for Education Prof. Suwaiba Ahmed commended the initiative and pledged the ministry's full support for its execution.
Earlier, Disu noted that education remained central to addressing challenges across sectors, affirming that the Force was committed to introducing courses that would enhance personnel development and national security.
