The Federal Government has released ₦11.8bn in zero interest loans to 6,842 academic and non academic staff across 141 tertiary institutions in Nigeria under the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund, data from the Federal Ministry of Education has confirmed.
The TISSF, a joint initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and TETFund launched in August 2025, provides interest free loans of up to ₦10m per eligible staff member, targeting welfare improvement, career development, and financial stability across the tertiary education sector.
Records published on the ministry's website show that 34,000 applicants from 219 institutions have been verified so far. Staff of federal universities account for the largest share of applicants at 59%, followed by polytechnic staff at 23% and colleges of education staff at 18%. Benefiting institutions include federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Eligibility requires at least 5 years of retirement.
Under the broader Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative, 240 eTricycles have been distributed across 12 institutions.
Two additional programmes are running concurrently under the same initiative. The EduRevamp Teacher Platform, a digital training system launched at the first National Teacher Summit in January 2026, has recorded 37,000 registered users, with 18,000 teachers fully enrolled in its training modules. The platform delivers audio and video lessons, case studies, and certification opportunities for continuous professional development.
The School Safety Portal, developed in partnership with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps under the School Safety Act of 2025, currently holds data on 156,000 geolocated schools nationwide. The portal was designed to strengthen security management across Nigerian schools.
Together, the three programmes form part of the Federal Government's ongoing effort to modernise education infrastructure, improve staff welfare, and enhance institutional security across Nigeria's tertiary and basic education landscape.
