Six persons, including four members of the National Youth Service Corps and a soldier, have died following a road accident on the Girei Song Highway in Adamawa State.

The crash occurred at about 1:50 p.m. in the Narehi area of Girei Local Government Area and involved a military gun truck travelling from Gombi to Yola and a commercial Hummer bus heading from Yola to Mubi. Eyewitness accounts indicated that the impact caused the bus to overturn before it caught fire, trapping those on board.

The spokesperson of the Adamawa State Police Command, SP Suleiman Ngurore, confirmed the incident and disclosed that all passengers in the commercial vehicle lost their lives at the scene. He stated, “Tragically, all five passengers aboard the Hummer bus were burnt to death after the vehicle caught fire following the collision.

“Preliminary identification shows that four of the deceased were members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) posted to Adamawa State.”

Ngurore identified two of the victims as Suleiman Juliet and Usman Shuaibu, both from Kaduna State. He added that efforts were ongoing to establish the identities of the remaining victims.

In addition, the police spokesperson confirmed that a soldier travelling in the military vehicle also died as a result of the crash, bringing the total number of fatalities to six.

Emergency responders and police operatives were deployed to the scene shortly after the incident. The bodies of the deceased were evacuated and deposited at the Specialist Hospital in Yola.

Authorities have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision. Ngurore assured that relatives of the victims would be contacted once the identification process is completed.

He further disclosed that updates would be provided as the investigation progresses, as officials work to determine the cause of the accident and verify all identities involved.
