A 2026 UTME candidate sparked widespread debate across social media after sharing a video of herself cutting off her tinted hair at 5:00 a.m. on the morning of her examination to avoid any complications during entry into her CBT centre.
The candidate, who posted the video on TikTok, where it has since gone viral, disclosed that her examination was scheduled for 6:30 a.m. on the first day of the 2026 UTME exercise. Uncertain about how strictly appearance rules would be enforced at her centre, she opted to remove the hair rather than risk being turned away at the gate.
In the video, she expressed frustration over what she described as the unpredictability of examination conditions, stating that she preferred full compliance with every possible guideline over a last minute confrontation with invigilators.
The clip drew sharp and divided reactions. A section of viewers backed her decision, arguing that strict enforcement at JAMB examinations is well documented and that caution was reasonable. Others, however, questioned whether the action was necessary at all, with critics suggesting that fear of disqualification was pushing candidates toward extreme measures even where no rule had been explicitly stated.
The video has since broadened into wider conversations among prospective candidates about the extent of personal appearance regulations during the UTME. Discussions have spread to related concerns, including piercings, artificial lashes, and unconventional hairstyles, reflecting growing uncertainty among students about what is and is not permitted at examination centres.
The incident has drawn attention to the psychological pressure candidates face during the UTME period and the lengths many are prepared to go to secure their chances of sitting the examination without disruption.
Stakeholders have been urged to consider how examination bodies can maintain strict standards without subjecting candidates to unnecessary stress arising from rules that are perceived as unclear or inconsistently applied.
