The Governing Council of Gombe State University has approved the promotion of several academic staff members to the ranks of Professor and Reader, following favourable external assessment reports.
The decision was contained in a Special Bulletin, Volume 002 No 009, issued by the institution on Monday, 29th June, 2026, and signed by the University's Public Relations Officer.
According to the bulletin, the Council approved the elevation of five Readers to the rank of Professor and one Senior Lecturer to the rank of Reader, although the accompanying official list names six newly appointed Professors. All promotions take retroactive effect from 1st October, 2025.
Among those elevated to the Professorial cadre is Prof Andrew Kwaji of the Department of Chemical Science, who specialises in Organic Chemistry, alongside Prof Rejoice Atiko of the Department of Chemical Sciences, also a Professor of Organic Chemistry.
Prof Haruna Saidu of the Department of Biological Science was promoted as Professor of Environmental Biotechnology, while Prof Shu'aibu Isa of the Department of Microbiology becomes Professor of Medical Microbiology and Microbial Food Safety.
Prof Nasiru Inuwa of the Department of Economics was elevated as Professor of Energy Economy, and Prof Semiu O Oladejo of the Department of Mathematical Science was promoted as Professor of Applied Mathematics, specialising in Quantum Information and Computing.
Dr Habib Abdulkarim of the Department of Accounting was promoted to the rank of Reader, specialising in Accounting and Finance.
The promotions come months after the Council, at its 60th meeting held on 9th April, 2026, approved the appointment of Prof Rasheed Abdulganiy as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic). The University is currently led by Vice Chancellor Prof Sani Ahmed Yauta, who was confirmed in the substantive role after previously serving in an acting capacity from October 2024.
Established in 2003 during the administration of former Governor Mohammed Danjuma Goje, Gombe State University has in recent years drawn recognition for its digital administration efforts, having been named best State University Website at the Nigeria GovTech Conference and Public Service Awards.
The University extended its congratulations to the newly promoted Professors and Reader.
