The University Library of McPherson University, Seriki Sotayo, Ogun State, has taken a major step towards modernising its operations with a capacity building workshop focused on library automation and digital transformation. The initiative reflects the institution’s growing commitment to aligning its library services with global best practices in information management and digital accessibility.
The training brought together library staff to explore innovative approaches aimed at improving efficiency and service delivery. It was facilitated by Sylvester Ebhonu, the National Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Library Association, popularly referred to as the “Digital Librarian.” Ebhonu outlined practical strategies for preparing libraries for automation, with particular emphasis on mobile applications, collaborative digital tools, and contactless technologies that enhance user experience and operational efficiency.
He shared extensive professional experience gained from both local and international engagements, noting that modern libraries must evolve beyond traditional systems to remain relevant in an increasingly digital academic environment.
The University Librarian, Jerome Idiegbeyan Ose, urged participants to fully engage in the training and ensure that the knowledge gained is effectively implemented in their daily operations. He encouraged staff to take advantage of the expertise of the facilitator to deepen their understanding of modern library systems.
"He emphasised the importance of attentiveness and active participation, noting that the success of the automation drive depends largely on staff commitment and willingness to adopt new technologies," Idiegbeyan Ose stated.
Themed “Preparing Libraries for Automation: Practical Strategies Using Mobile Apps, Collaborative Tools and Contactless Technologies,” the workshop featured hands on practical sessions. It also included interactive question and answer segments and certificate presentations aimed at reinforcing learning outcomes. Participants were exposed to real time demonstrations of digital tools designed to streamline library services and improve access to academic resources.
Organisers said the training was designed to strengthen the capacity of McPherson University Library staff, making the institution more competitive with global standards in library and information science. The initiative is also expected to enhance the visibility of the university’s library among international scholars, researchers, and academic institutions.
