The National Association of Nigerian Students has called on the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to investigate the tenure of the outgoing Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Oyebode Adebowale, citing allegations of corruption, suppression of student unionism and anti student governance.

The NANS National President, Babatunde Afeez Akinteye, issued the demand in a statement on Thursday, describing Adebowale's administration as one that imposed hardship on students, stifled activism and punished union leaders who advocated for improved welfare.

"Your tenure was characterised by anti student policies that subjected students to hardship, strained them beyond their limits and made learning frustrating. Worst of all, whenever students rose to fight for their rights, you intimidated, suspended and ultimately expelled them. You punished student leaders who sought better welfare for students and silenced the Students' Union," the statement read.

The association alleged that Adebowale used his office to suppress student protests rather than foster an environment conducive to academic engagement, and warned that Nigerian students had lost confidence in his leadership.

"On behalf of the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, I call on the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to investigate the tenure of Professor Kayode Oyebode Adebowale as Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan," Akinteye stated.

NANS further warned that it would mobilise students against any future public appointment involving the outgoing vice chancellor.

"Be informed that, following your tenure, if you are nominated for any position in this country, Nigerian students will mobilise massively against you," the statement added.

The association separately congratulated the newly appointed Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter Olamakinde Olapegba, urging him to champion student welfare, uphold transparency and avoid what it described as the shortcomings of his predecessor.

"We hope that you will champion the liberation of students. Furthermore, we enjoin you to be prudent in all your dealings, be student friendly, and ensure improved welfare and a better academic environment for students," NANS said.

The University of Ibadan had not issued an official response to the allegations at the time of this report.
