Screenshots of credit alerts have been circulating on X since Friday, as beneficiaries of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) student loan scheme began confirming receipt of their June and July upkeep allowances, months after the payments were originally due.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) moved to confirm the development officially, ending weeks of uncertainty among students who had repeatedly flagged delays in the monthly disbursement of allowances under the Federal Government's tertiary loan programme.

In a statement, NANS National President, Akinteye Babatunde, disclosed that the payment run covering the two outstanding months had begun, and stated that "every outstanding backlog will be paid." He explained that disbursements were being released in batches rather than all at once, which accounted for why some eligible students had not yet seen alerts land in their accounts despite others already confirming payment.

Babatunde asked affected beneficiaries to hold off on raising fresh complaints in the meantime, noting that "if you have not received yours yet, kindly stay calm, as disbursements are being made in batches." He added that the Association would keep monitoring the process on behalf of students, closing the statement with an assurance that NANS remained committed to defending student welfare and interests "always."

The upkeep allowance runs alongside NELFUND's tuition payments, which go directly to institutions, and is meant to give eligible tertiary students monthly financial support toward living costs. Delays in that monthly cycle have been a recurring source of friction between the student body and the Fund in recent months, with beneficiaries frequently taking to social media to report late or missing payments.

Friday's confirmation from NANS marks the clearest signal yet that the backlog is being worked through, though no fixed date has been given for when every eligible student can expect to have received both months' allowances.
