The National Association of Nigerian Students has constituted an independent committee to verify and monitor educational intervention projects executed by the North East Development Commission, citing the scale of public investment committed to educational development in the region and the need to ensure interventions reach intended beneficiaries.

The committee was established through a letter of appointment signed by the NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde, who noted that students in the North East could not afford another cycle of abandoned projects, substandard facilities or interventions that failed to deliver value on the ground.

Comrade Ali Amtai Saidu will chair the committee, with Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir serving as vice chairman and Prince Muhammed Sani Hassan as secretary. Other members include Comrade Ibrahim Usman Maga, Comrade Bukar Abubakar Gana, Comrade Sulaiman Umar Chinade, Comrade Aliyu Sulaiman Aliyu and Comrade Philip Peter Achagwa. NANS noted that the composition reflects geographical spread, experience in student leadership and a commitment to transparency.

The committee is mandated to conduct independent verification exercises, track project implementation, engage beneficiary institutions and communities, assess impact and produce evidence based reports to guide advocacy and stakeholder engagement. Members are specifically required to visit project sites, confirm the quality and timeline of delivery, interface with school authorities, student unions and community leaders, and document challenges affecting access and learning outcomes.

NANS clarified that the committee's establishment is not intended to duplicate the statutory responsibilities of government agencies but to strengthen student participation, transparency and accountability in educational development initiatives.

Speaking after his appointment, committee chairman Comrade Amtai Saidu raised concerns over the alleged abandonment of some education projects in the North East and what he described as inadequate scholarship schemes for students in the region. He urged President Bola Tinubu to address the matter directly.

The association stated that it would publish periodic reports to keep the public informed on progress, gaps and recommendations arising from the committee's work.
