The National Association of Nigerian Students has unveiled the Constituency Scholarship and Talent Development Scheme, a programme designed to connect Nigerian students with scholarships, mentorship and international academic opportunities through structured partnerships with legislators at the federal and state levels.
The association announced the initiative in a statement made available to journalists in Lokoja on Monday, with NANS President Babatunde Akinteye describing it as a turning point in student access to quality education and global exposure.
"This initiative is a major step forward in ensuring that Nigerian students are not limited by geography or financial constraints. It is not just about awarding scholarships, but about creating pathways for long term academic and career success," Akinteye stated.
The scheme is structured around three focus areas: scholarship support for students across constituencies, international academic exposure programmes, and mentorship and skills development initiatives. Each participating constituency is expected to support between 20 and 30 students annually, with at least 10 beneficiaries gaining access to international exposure programmes.
Director of International Projects and Partnerships Abraham Adewoye disclosed that the programme would draw on partnerships across the United Kingdom, the United States and Europe to link Nigerian students with the global academic community.
"What we are building is a bridge between Nigerian students and the global academic community. Through this programme, beneficiaries will gain exposure to international standards, networks and opportunities that prepare them for the future," Adewoye noted.
He assured that the scheme would cover all constituencies nationwide without exception, and that it would be administered with transparency, accountability and measurable impact across all participating areas.
NANS called on senators, members of the House of Representatives and state lawmakers to adopt the Constituency Scholarship and Talent Development Scheme as part of their constituency development programmes, noting that it aligns with existing funding mechanisms including constituency project allocations, education intervention funds and youth empowerment budgets.
The association added that the initiative would enable lawmakers to channel constituency resources into structured and transparent educational support systems that directly reach students.
NANS represents more than 50 million Nigerian students in tertiary institutions across the country and in the diaspora.
