The National Commission for Colleges of Education has launched a digital transformation drive aimed at overhauling how it monitors and regulates teacher education institutions across Nigeria. At the centre of the initiative are two technology platforms, the Blackboard Learning Management System and Illuminate Analytics, which the commission is deploying to improve quality assurance, institutional governance and academic monitoring in colleges of education.
The Executive Secretary of the commission, Angela Ajala, disclosed this on Monday while speaking at a four day training programme in Abuja themed "Enhancing Digital Competencies for Effective Learning Management and Executive Productivity." The training is designed to equip commission staff with the digital skills required to effectively deploy online tools, learning management systems and data driven technologies across teaching, administration and policy functions.
Ajala noted that periodic accreditation visits, which had formed the basis of traditional supervision, were no longer adequate in a rapidly evolving digital education environment. The new platforms, she explained, would give the commission real time visibility into activities within colleges of education, covering curriculum delivery, lecturer engagement, student participation and learning outcomes.
She added that data generated through both platforms would enable the commission to identify gaps, track performance trends and take evidence based decisions to improve teacher education nationwide. The initiative, she stressed, represents a significant investment in workforce development and aligns with global best practices in educational regulation.
Ajala also commended the commission's technology partners, Pole Global Marketing and Anthology, for their role in supporting the digital transformation agenda.
Also speaking at the event, Adebayo Wale attributed the partnership to the commission's commitment to strengthening supervision and accountability across colleges of education. He explained that Blackboard LMS would function as a centralised platform for learning resources, assessments, communication and academic records, while Illuminate Analytics would deliver actionable insights for strategic planning, performance evaluation and institutional improvement.
The commission stated that the initiative is expected to enhance transparency and position Nigeria's teacher education sector for greater efficiency and innovation as institutions increasingly operate in a digital environment.
