Plateau State has received commendation from the National Youth Service Corps for its handling of corps members' security, including during a difficult period earlier in the year when movement across the state was temporarily disrupted. The Director General of the scheme, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, delivered the commendation during a courtesy visit to Governor Caleb Mutfwang at the Government House, Rayfield, Jos.
Nafiu recalled a specific incident in April at Angwan Rukuba, acknowledging the governor's personal intervention at the time. "Your Excellency personally called me to assure me of the safety and security of Corps Members deployed to Plateau State and those transiting through the state to other parts of the country. True to your promise, security agencies immediately deployed surveillance teams, ensuring the safe movement of prospective Corps Members to their various states of deployment," he stated.
The Director General also appreciated the state government for providing accommodation to corps members who could not continue their journeys due to a curfew imposed on the Jos metropolis at the time. He praised the state's consistent support for the scheme, specifically noting the ongoing renovation and construction of a perimeter fence at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Mangu, as well as the state government's regular supplementation of corps members' feeding during orientation courses.
Nafiu used the visit to make a direct appeal for operational vehicles to strengthen monitoring across the state. "Like the proverbial Oliver Twist, I wish to appeal to Your Excellency to kindly provide the Scheme with operational vehicles to enable effective monitoring of Corps Members across the state and obtain first hand information on their welfare. Providing mobility for the State Coordinator, Zonal Inspectors and Local Government Inspectors will further strengthen the monitoring of Corps Members, especially during the forthcoming 2027 general elections," he said.
Governor Mutfwang reaffirmed his administration's commitment to the scheme, describing support for the NYSC as a necessity rather than an option. "I believe the NYSC is a Scheme worth sustaining because of its enormous contribution to national unity and development. It remains one of the strongest instruments of national integration in Nigeria," he stated.
The governor assured the Director General that renovation of the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp would be completed before the end of 2026 and pledged to give favourable consideration to the request for vehicles. He also noted that Plateau State holds a particular attachment to the scheme, given that its founding father, General Yakubu Gowon, hails from the state.
