A notice circulating online that claimed the Nigerian Education Loan Fund had suspended its student loan disbursement programme is fake, the agency has confirmed.
NELFUND issued the clarification on Saturday through its official X account, warning students and members of the public to disregard the message entirely and rely only on verified communications from its official channels.
The circulating document had claimed that "due to unforeseen operational circumstances, NELFUND has taken the difficult decision to temporarily pause the student loan disbursement programme with immediate effect." The statement spread quickly online, causing concern among students who depend on the scheme for access to higher education funding.
The Fund was unequivocal in its response: "This document is fake. Kindly disregard the circulating letter on suspension of student loan disbursements. NELFUND has not issued any such directive."
The denial comes at a time of heightened public interest in the loan scheme. The Federal Government has stated that the programme has benefited 1,000,000 students since its establishment, making it one of the most significant student financing interventions in Nigeria's recent history.
NELFUND urged students and stakeholders to verify all updates through its official platforms before acting on any information about the programme.
