The Chairman of the Nigeria Computer Society, Kogi chapter, Godwin Sani, has launched an initiative to close gender gaps in the computing sector. He noted that the programme would provide structured pathways for female students to grow, compete, collaborate, and lead in technology. Sani pledged the society’s support, observing that the initiative aligns with its mission to promote digital literacy and innovation.
The scheme, known as the Campus Tech Queens Initiative, was unveiled on Wednesday at Kogi State Polytechnic in Lokoja. It is a hackathon driven, mentorship based national programme designed to identify, train, mentor, and showcase female tech talent across Nigerian campuses.
President of the Nigerian Women in Information Technology, Oluwakemi Ayodele, disclosed that the initiative would run through six stages. These include campus sensitisation, registration, capacity building, and mentorship. She emphasised that the project is targeted at preparing female students for global digital excellence and leadership, thereby bridging the gender gap in the technology ecosystem.
Ayodele urged female students to seize the opportunity, stating, "The digital economy needs your voice, your creativity, and your brilliance." She also appealed for collaborative efforts to foster growth. "Let’s work together to develop local solutions and drive innovation. We urge governments to partner with us and build a stronger, tech advanced Nigeria," she added.
The launch attracted significant support from government officials. The Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Helen Aderibigbe, pledged her ministry’s backing and encouraged students to explore their potential to contribute to national tech growth. Furthermore, the Education Commissioner, Wemi Jones, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to girl child education and empowerment. The Rector of the institution, Sanusi Avidime, assured the association of the polytechnic’s support in ensuring the success of the programme. Stakeholders believe the initiative will significantly promote inclusion and professional development for women in information technology.
