A keenly contested election at the Senate Building of Southern Delta University (SDU), Ozoro, resulted in Dr Azuka Chegwe becoming the new Chairman of the Delta State Chapter of the Nigerian Library Association (NLA). The Librarian of Novena University, Ogume, secured the position after a competitive process among several candidates for the respected role within the library and information science profession.
Dr Chegwe brings extensive experience to the office, having previously served as Public Relations Officer and later as Secretary-General of the Delta State chapter. A Certified Librarian of Nigeria (CLN), he currently oversees library administration at Novena University, where he also teaches. His academic portfolio includes courses such as Library Use, Study Skills, Information Literacy, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
A participant in the voting process described the outcome as decisive. “Dr. Chegwe’s victory was not just a win; it was a resounding landslide that clearly reflects the confidence and trust members of the association have in his leadership,” the member noted. Observers described the new chairman as a dogged and resilient leader committed to excellence. Many members expressed optimism that the association will experience progressive transformation under his watch.
The new chairman earned a PhD in Library and Information Science from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, a prominent research institution in Nigeria. He is recognised as an experienced professional with years of expertise. In addition to his administrative duties, Dr. Chegwe is an active researcher who has made notable contributions to academic literature through publications in both local and international journals. His research areas include library development, information literacy, digital knowledge systems, and the changing role of libraries in the modern era of education.
Colleagues in the profession describe him as a passionate advocate for improved library services, particularly in Nigerian universities, where access to information remains critical. Stakeholders expect his leadership to encourage innovation in library management and strengthen the library's role as a vital knowledge hub for students and researchers.
