Corps members serving in Osun State have been put on notice regarding the consequences of service evasion and indiscipline as the National Youth Service Corps intensifies enforcement of programme regulations.
Ekeng Ita Kubiangha, Osun State Coordinator of NYSC, delivered the warning on Thursday during a familiarisation visit combined with the General Community Development Service meeting at Osogbo Township Stadium in Omo West, Olorunda Local Government Area.
Kubiangha stressed that national development relies heavily on individual responsibility and genuine participation in the scheme, urging corps members to embrace their national service obligations rather than seeking ways to evade them.
"The clarion call is for you to put in your quota to national development and not to be evasive during service," Kubiangha stated firmly.
Beyond service evasion, the coordinator outlined specific infractions that could attract severe disciplinary action, including possible extension of the service year. He warned against unauthorised travel, lending of NYSC uniforms to unauthorised persons, and failure to participate in the mandatory monthly clearance exercise.
Kubiangha emphasised professionalism as non negotiable, requiring corps members to dress properly in approved NYSC uniforms and demonstrate respect for constituted authority throughout their service period.
He challenged corps members to create meaningful and measurable impact at their Places of Primary Assignment, aligning their efforts with the core objectives established for the scheme.
The Osogbo Zonal Inspector, Dolapo Stephen, reinforced the coordinator's message during the event, urging strict adherence to NYSC rules and regulations.
Stephen reminded corps members that the scheme operates within a clearly defined legal and administrative framework that all participants must respect and follow.
The warnings come amid growing concerns about declining discipline among some corps members, with reports of unauthorised absences, improper conduct, and failure to complete assigned duties reaching NYSC management across various states.
The Osun State office's decision to publicly address these issues signals a broader commitment to maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of the national service programme, which has served as a cornerstone of youth development and national integration since its establishment.
Corps members are advised to take the warnings seriously and focus on maximising the opportunities the service year provides for personal growth, professional development, and meaningful contribution to their host communities.
