Sokoto State University has postponed its 8th Combined Convocation Ceremony indefinitely, citing circumstances beyond its control, with the institution assuring graduating students, parents, and the public that a new date will be communicated in due course.

The university's management disclosed the development in a statement, informing graduating students, parents, guardians, alumni, guests, and the general public that the ceremony originally planned to honour graduands would no longer proceed as scheduled.

The combined ceremony had been billed to celebrate students from the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th sets, with activities earlier scheduled to run from Monday, 15th June, through Saturday, 20th June 2026, at the university's main campus in Sokoto, starting at 9 AM each day. The event had been positioned as a landmark occasion bringing together several graduating cohorts under one combined ceremony, with the university inviting the wider community, distinguished guests, and alumni to attend.

Management stated that it regretted any inconvenience the postponement may cause and appreciated the understanding and continued support of all stakeholders affected by the change.

The University did not disclose the specific circumstances that necessitated the postponement, nor did it provide a timeline for when an update on the new date might be expected.

Combined convocation ceremonies covering multiple graduating sets have become increasingly common across Nigerian state universities as institutions work through backlogs built up over recent academic sessions. Similar postponements have affected other Nigerian tertiary institutions in 2026, with ceremonies pushed back for reasons ranging from logistical constraints to administrative reviews.

Graduating students awaiting their formal conferment of degrees will now have to wait for further communication from the University before making plans around the rescheduled event.
