Yakubu Gowon University (formerly known as the University of Abuja) and the Supply Chain Research and Innovation Hub have signed a lease agreement to establish the National Agricultural Reference Laboratory and Centre of Excellence on the university's campus, moving the project from planning into active implementation.
The agreement follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed by both organisations in 2025 and now provides the legal framework for detailed design, site preparation and construction of a facility described as a potential leader in African agricultural laboratory research.
SCRiH Founder, Adebayo Adeleke, said the signing marked a turning point for the project. "Our vision is to build a national institution where science, innovation and education come together to advance food security, strengthen agricultural competitiveness and support sustainable development across Africa," he stated.
The centre will provide advanced laboratory facilities covering agricultural science, food safety, biotechnology, biosecurity and environmental monitoring. It is also expected to train future scientists and researchers while fostering collaboration among academia, government, industry, and international partners.
The project is being delivered through a consortium of Nigerian and international organisations. Spacecube Construction Limited will lead the architectural design and construction, while Gobiosis International (Pty) Ltd and EMERA Consultants Ltd will oversee the implementation of laboratory infrastructure. Global technology partners include Siemens, Köttermann GmbH of Germany, and H. Ludi and Co. AG of Switzerland.
The University of Abuja is participating under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi.
