As a fresher or a returning student, having an accommodation plan is very important. Knowing where you’ll stay while in school is just as important as knowing your lecture timetable. Luckily, UNICAL provides hostel accommodation for its students, both old and new.

So, if you plan to stay on campus, understanding how the UNICAL hostel system works will help you prepare properly. The University of Calabar has released official guidelines for the 2025/2026 hostel accommodation exercise, and we have saved you the stress by breaking it down for you. Sit back and go through this!

UNICAL hostel is popularly known as the Republic of Malabor, and as a member of the UNICAL community, you are proudly referred to as a Malabite (male) or Malabress (female).

To be able to get a space in the UNICAL hostel facility, you must first complete payment of your school fees. If your fees are not fully paid and verified, your application will not be considered. To be on the safe side, check the UNICAL School Fees Schedule to confirm the exact amount before you go ahead with payment.

Major UNICAL Hostels (Malabor)

  1. Hall 2 (Female Hostel) - This is one of the biggest hostels for the ladies. It’s a go to for many freshers and returning students because it’s close to the school gate and administrative areas.

  2. Hall 4 (Female Hostel) - Another major spot for the women on campus. Like Hall 2, it is usually quite packed because of its proximity to classes.

  3. Hall 5 (The New Female Hostel) - This one is often seen as a bit more modern compared to some of the older blocks. It’s highly sought after by students who want a slightly more comfortable stay.

  4. Hall 6 (Male Hostel) - This is one of the main blocks for the guys. It’s known for having a very strong comradeship feel, where the students look out for one another.

  5. Clinical/Medical Hostels - These are specifically for students in the College of Medical Sciences (Medicine, Nursing, etc.). They are usually closer to the Teaching Hospital (UCTH) or the medical labs, so that students don't have to trek too far for their clinical postings.

  6. Graduate School Hostel - As the name suggests, this is strictly for those doing their Postgraduate studies (Master's or PhD). It’s usually much quieter and more private than the undergraduate halls.

Alternative Accommodation Options Around UNICAL

If you are unable to secure a space in Malabor, there are other options you can consider.

Windsworth Hostel

Windsworth Hostel is a popular private hostel close to UNICAL. It offers better privacy and modern facilities, but the cost is usually higher than on campus accommodation.

Off Campus Accommodation

If you don't get a space, most students look for lodges in areas like Satellite Town, Hall 2 road, Goldie, or Etta Agbor, which are just outside the school gates. If you choose this option, you should consider transportation, security, and overall cost before making a decision.
