The University of Jos has convened a compulsory all student meeting for 31 July 2026 to address escalating security concerns, suspending lectures between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon to guarantee full attendance at the Faculty of Social Sciences Auditorium.

The directive was issued through internal memorandum and signed by Vice Chancellor Prof. Tanko Ishaya, who cited recent developments threatening the institution's peace, security and reputation as the basis for the emergency gathering.

"In view of recent events that threaten the peace, security and good image of our University, I have approved the convening of a crucial meeting with all students of the University of Jos," the memorandum stated.

Ishaya identified the meeting's core agenda as a review of general security conditions within the university community, recent conduct by students described as unhealthy, and the formulation of collective measures to protect all members of the institution. "The primary objective of this meeting is to deliberate on general security concerns within the University community, recent unhealthy activities of students, and to chart a collective course of action to safeguard the well being of all members of the University community," the memo read.

All deans of faculties and heads of departments received direct instructions to suspend academic activities during the meeting window. "Considering the significance of the meeting, all Deans of Faculties and Heads of Departments are by this notice directed to declare a lecture free period between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on the said date. This will ensure that all students attend and participate in the meeting," the directive stated.

The summons follows two separate incidents that have shaken the university community. A farmer's decapitated body was discovered on farmland within the institution's permanent site approximately two weeks ago. The university confirmed the deceased was neither a student nor a member of staff but a farmer known to operate in the area, with security agencies subsequently opening an investigation.

The meeting was also preceded by the alleged mob killing of Ibrahim Mbaya, a former student and Jos based model, who died after youths attacked him over allegations of mobile phone theft at an off campus residence. The Plateau State Police Command has since arrested suspects and commenced a formal investigation into the incident.
