A financial boost of ₦5 million has been approved as a take off grant for the newly reinstated Students’ Union Government at the University of Lagos. The Vice Chancellor, Prof Folasade Ogunsola, also approved the provision of temporary office space and the refurbishment of an 18 seater bus to support the union’s operations.

The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof Johnson Agunsoye, disclosed this during the swearing in ceremony held at the Tayo Aderinokun Hall, Akoka. He noted that the inauguration signals the commencement of a phased process leading to the full constitution of the Students’ Union Executive Council and Students’ Parliament in the 2026/2027 academic session.

Presided over by the Vice Chancellor, the event featured the administration of the Oath of Office by a legal practitioner, Risqiat Usman. This was followed by the presentation of the Staff of Office to the Students’ Union President, Bolaji Akinpelu. Other executives inaugurated include the Vice President, Apalomo Sunday; General Secretary, Solomon Daniel; and President of the Institute of Continuing Education, Oreoluwa Abraham.

A statement issued by the Head of the Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga Ibraheem, noted that the Vice Chancellor urged the executives to regard their positions as a call to service. Prof Ogunsola reflected on the suspension of the union by the university Senate on April 24, 2016. She explained that it became necessary following violent protests over water and electricity shortages, which disrupted academic stability. She expressed confidence that the new leadership would uphold the values of discipline and constructive engagement.

The Divisional Police Officer of Sabo Police Station, Comfort Alabi, charged the student leaders to promote peace and reject all forms of social vices. In response, President Bolaji Akinpelu described the development as a “new beginning,” unveiling the “Renaissance Administration” as a symbol of renewed leadership.

The ceremony also featured the inauguration of hall chairpersons, including Egbaaibon Christopher (El Kanemi Hall), Junaid Samuel (Eni Njoku Hall), and Abigael Encharia (Fagunwa Hall). Others are Egbaaibon Kayode (Femi Gbajabiamila Hall), Yinusa Teslim (King Jaja Hall), Ebunoluwa Basit (Prof Saburi Biobaku Hall), Augustine Ojie Emmanuella (Madam Kofo Ademola Hall), and Okpei Peace (Madam Tinubu Hall).
