Thirteen Engineering Students from the University of Lagos spent World Engineering Day at a production facility in Gbagada, Lagos, getting a firsthand look at how the concepts they study in classrooms translate into industrial practice.
The visit, organised by JMG Limited as part of its activities to mark World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development 2026, took the students through the company's JMG and Jamara production facility. Two representatives of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers accompanied the group, which was guided through the Facility by members of the JMG Engineering Team under the supervision of a dedicated Health, Safety, and Environment officer.
The global theme for this year's observance, "Smart Engineering for a Sustainable Future Through Innovation and Digitalization," shaped the focus of the tour. Students were walked through key production processes and given practical insight into how smart systems and digital technologies are being applied in industrial settings. An interactive session with JMG engineers gave them the opportunity to ask questions and explore career possibilities within the sector.
Plant Manager Fouad El Chami said the purpose of opening the Facility to students went beyond the day's visit. "Engineering is best understood not only in classrooms but through real industrial experience. Opening our facility to students allows them to see innovation, technology, and problem solving in action. It helps bridge the gap between theory and practice while inspiring young Engineers to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria's industrial and technological advancement," he said.
For UNILAG engineering students, still years away from entering the workforce, the exposure offered something that no lecture can easily replicate: direct contact with the environment they are being trained to work in.
