Eighty students at the University of Lagos have become the founding members of a new corporate governance club, in what organisers describe as the beginning of a national drive to embed ethical leadership principles into Nigerian University Education.
The Society for Corporate Governance Nigeria (SCGN) launched its first ever student chapter, the SCGN Corporate Governance Club, at UNILAG in a ceremony that included the swearing in of pioneer executives by SCGN Chief Operating Officer Dr Tola Bamigbaiye Elatuyi.
Delivering the keynote address, SCGN Managing Director and Chief Executive, Mrs Chioma Mordi, told the assembled Law Students that leadership must be understood as a responsibility rather than a privilege. She stressed that the professionals Nigeria needs most are those who combine technical competence with ethical judgment and accountability.
The ceremony was attended by Senior Members of the UNILAG Faculty of Law including former Dean Professor Ige Bolodeoku, current Dean Professor Abiola Sanni (SAN), and lecturers Dr Idris Odekunle, Dr Issa Adedokun and Dr Ifeoma Oluwasemiloore.
The club's 80 Pioneer Members are drawn from eight departments across the University, with membership open to students from all disciplines with an interest in governance, ethics and leadership. Planned activities include workshops, seminars, panel discussions, governance debates and an annual Corporate Governance Week featuring keynote addresses and networking sessions.
The UNILAG chapter is the pilot phase of a wider rollout that SCGN intends to extend to Lagos State University and Pan Atlantic University before expanding the programme across Nigeria and eventually to other African countries.
For students entering a professional landscape where governance failures continue to cost Nigerian institutions dearly, the club offers early exposure to the frameworks and networks that ethical leadership requires.
