A dedicated committee has been constituted to oversee the planning and execution of the NextGen Innovation Challenge 2026. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, approved the move to ensure effective coordination and successful implementation of the programme.

The committee is expected to develop a robust framework that will guide participation, evaluation, and eventual scaling of innovative ideas generated through the challenge. The Vice Chancellor urged members of the newly constituted committee to approach their assignment with diligence and creativity. He emphasised the need for transparency, inclusiveness, and excellence in the execution of the programme.

Professor Egbewole noted that the competition aligns with the University’s strategic vision of becoming a leading hub for cutting edge research, innovation, and enterprise development. He emphasised that initiatives such as NextGen are essential in nurturing ideas that can address real world challenges.

“The NextGen Innovation Challenge provides a unique opportunity for students and young researchers to translate theoretical knowledge into practical solutions,” the VC stated.

He added that such platforms are critical in bridging the gap between academia and industry, thereby enhancing the relevance of university education in a rapidly evolving global economy. The Vice Chancellor further stressed the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in driving innovation.

According to him, the challenge will encourage participants from diverse academic backgrounds to work together, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving skills among the University’s student population. Professor Egbewole expressed optimism that the initiative would not only spotlight emerging talents but also attract partnerships and investments that could further strengthen the University’s research ecosystem.

He described the initiative as a forward looking platform capable of unlocking the creative and entrepreneurial potential of young innovators within and beyond the university community. The programme, he said, is expected to position UNILORIN as a competitive player in innovation driven education in Nigeria and beyond.

The endorsement reflects UNILORIN’s sustained efforts to promote innovation led learning and enterprise development. Stakeholders have expressed confidence that the initiative will inspire a new generation of thinkers and innovators capable of driving sustainable growth and technological advancement.
