Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has distanced itself from a viral video circulating on social media alleging that one of its lecturers was involved in a sex related scandal, stating that preliminary findings showed the individual featured in the footage is not a member of its academic staff.
The clarification follows widespread circulation of the video across social media platforms, where users claimed a University lecturer had been caught in a compromising situation with a female student, generating intense public reaction and renewed conversation about sexual misconduct within Tertiary iInstitutions.
The Institution disclosed that it reviewed the allegations immediately after the video gained public attention and found no evidence linking any member of its academic staff to the incident. It urged members of the public to disregard the claims, describing them as misleading and capable of damaging the reputation of innocent individuals and the University.
The Acting Head of Information, Public Relations and Protocol, Njelita Louis, stressed that the University maintains a firm stance against sexual harassment and all forms of misconduct. He explained that the Institution operates a sexual harassment committee headed by a professor and remains strict on protecting students, noting that any complaint against a lecturer is handled through an established procedure.
Management further explained that allegations involving staff members are never treated lightly, with every complaint subjected to due process through established disciplinary channels. It stated that maintaining a safe academic environment remains a priority, and any individual found guilty of misconduct after proper investigation would face appropriate sanctions in line with the Institution's regulations.
The University also appealed to social media users and the public to verify information before sharing it online, warning that unverified content could unfairly tarnish reputations and undermine public confidence in higher education Institutions.
The development comes as Nigerian Universities strengthen institutional mechanisms to address sexual harassment, student welfare, and ethical conduct, with many institutions establishing dedicated committees and reporting channels to encourage victims to report cases while ensuring fair and transparent investigations.
The University reaffirmed its commitment to an academic environment founded on discipline, professionalism, and mutual respect, maintaining that protecting the rights and dignity of students and staff remains central to its core values. It assured students, parents, and other members of the University community that it would continue to uphold high ethical standards while responding promptly to allegations affecting institutional integrity.
