Seventeen secondary school students in Ondo State are facing indefinite withholding of their 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination results and testimonials after a video showing them tearing school uniforms and chanting inappropriate slogans during post examination celebrations went viral on social media.

The sanctions were announced by the Ondo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology following an emergency meeting between ministry officials and school administrators at the ministry's headquarters in Akure.

The affected students are from three schools in Akure: Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas College, and CAC Grammar School. Their names will be entered into a newly created black book for student misconduct, and the ministry has directed principals across the state to establish similar records for disciplinary infractions in their schools.

The ministry also ordered the immediate expulsion of any student featured in the video who is not in the graduating class, while senior officers at the affected schools were issued queries over alleged supervision failures that allowed the celebrations to deteriorate.

Commissioner for Education Professor Igbekele Ajibefun said the government would not tolerate conduct capable of damaging the reputation of its schools. "While celebrating academic milestones is natural, the growing sign out culture among secondary school students must be guided by decency. We will not fold our arms and watch the discipline we have painstakingly instilled in our schools be eroded for the sake of social media clout," he stated.

Permanent Secretary Dr Akindele Ige directed principals to report disruptive incidents to Zonal Education Offices before they escalate. Parents and affected students have been summoned to the ministry to collect official letters conveying the sanctions.

The video surfaced shortly after the students completed the 2026 WASSCE and drew widespread reactions online before prompting the government's intervention.
