It was first established in March 1982 by the government of the old Ondo State under the leadership of Chief Adekunle Ajasin. At that time, it was called Obafemi Awolowo University.
In 1985, it was renamed Ondo State University under a new administration. Later in 1999, the institution was moved to Akungba Akoko after the creation of new states from the old Ondo State. It was then renamed Adekunle Ajasin University in honour of its founding leader.
