The Federal Polytechnic, Oko has clarified that the multi storey building which collapsed at Amaokpala, a neighbouring community, is not located within the Polytechnic and that no student of the institution has been confirmed dead.

Management stated that various reports and narratives circulated on social media concerning the collapse. The Polytechnic stated categorically that the incident occurred at a privately owned lodge known as the 5 Elite Storey Building, located beside Tonimas Filling Station, and involved both students and non students. The building collapsed late Sunday night.

The Rector, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, was at the scene as early as 6.36 a.m. to personally ascertain the extent of the incident and confirm the welfare of any affected students. She was received by the President of the Students' Union Government, Giant Comrade Anuluonye Ifechukwu Joseph, the Public Relations Officer, Dr. Oguegbu Celestine Udoka, the Dean of Students' Affairs, Comrade Chibuzo Asomugha, the Chief Security Officer and other staff members.

The Anambra State Commissioner for Works, Architect Okey Ezeobi, and the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Ben Obidike, also visited the scene to assess the situation and support rescue efforts.

According to the Polytechnic, some occupants have already been rescued and are receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital for injuries described as not life threatening. Approximately two persons, reportedly not students of the institution, may still be trapped, with rescue personnel continuing efforts to locate them.

Management noted that the incident occurred after students had completed their second semester examinations, with a significant number already having vacated their hostels for the ongoing short break.

The Polytechnic urged members of the public to disregard unverified reports and sensational claims suggesting the collapse occurred inside the institution or that large numbers of its students are trapped, describing such narratives as false and misleading. It commended emergency responders, government officials, local volunteers and security personnel involved in the rescue operation, and pledged further updates as credible information becomes available.
